Remco Evenepoel of Belgium won the elite men’s time trial at the World Championships in Montreal on 20 September, completing the 39.2 kilometre course in 44 minutes and 53 seconds to claim a fourth straight world title in the discipline. No man had previously won four consecutive elite time-trial world championships, a run that matches the career totals of Fabian Cancellara and Tony Martin, two of the event’s great specialists.
Italy’s Filippo Ganna took silver, 57 seconds back, and France’s Paul Seixas claimed bronze at 1 minute and 13 seconds. Evenepoel controlled the effort from the start, his pacing and aerodynamics leaving the rest of the field chasing a benchmark that stood all afternoon on a technical, undulating route through the Canadian city. The Belgian has now won the world time trial title in each of the past four editions, a level of consistency the discipline has rarely seen.
Denmark led the Nordic challenge. Kasper Asgreen produced a strong ride to finish eighth, 1 minute and 48 seconds down, with compatriot Mikkel Bjerg 12th. Norway’s Tobias Foss came home 22nd and Andreas Leknessund 32nd, results that pointed to depth rather than podium contention for the region’s specialists on the day. Asgreen, a former Tour de France stage winner and cobbled Classics contender, kept a Dane inside the top ten.
The champion made no secret of his ambition afterward. “It’s amazing. It was obviously the goal to come and win here for the fourth time in a row,” Evenepoel said. The title cemented his status as the dominant force against the clock, a rider who has turned the world time trial into a personal preserve and who now stands alone on four in a row.
For Asgreen, eighth place offered a measure of where Danish time-trialling stands at the top level, close to the best but not yet challenging for medals in a discipline defined by marginal gains. The result formed part of a busy championship week in Montreal that also delivered a surprise winner in the men’s road race, and it kept Nordic riders in the conversation even as Evenepoel set the standard the rest could only chase.
