Holger Rune Loses to Daniel Altmaier in Shanghai After Taking the Opening Set 6-1

Holger Rune’s return from injury suffered another setback at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Wednesday, 7 October, when the Dane lost his first-round match to Germany’s Daniel Altmaier. Rune took the first set 6-1 but was beaten 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 after two hours and 14 minutes on court.

The 23-year-old was playing only his third tour-level event since rupturing his Achilles tendon in October last year. Rune, a former world No. 4 who has won five ATP Tour titles, came back after surgery and rehabilitation last month and won two rubbers for Denmark in their Davis Cup tie against Bulgaria, one of them against Grigor Dimitrov. His first tournament back on the main tour ended quickly, however, with an opening-round defeat to Kyrian Jacquet in Tokyo.

In Shanghai, Rune started on the front foot and raced through the opening set against the world No. 67. Altmaier, who is 27, steadied himself in the second set and edged the tiebreak to force a decider. The third set stayed tight until late on, when the German moved ahead and stepped up to serve for the match at 5-4. At 30/30 he struck a backhand pass to bring up match point and then closed it out. Rune could not recapture the control he had shown in the first set. “There were a couple of points where I really had to fight,” Altmaier said of that passage.

The victory was a welcome one for the German, who came into the event with a 16-26 win-loss record for 2026, according to the ATP’s Win/Loss Index. He admitted his confidence “hasn’t been the highest” this year and said he had been working on parts of his game in the days before the match. Altmaier now meets world No. 4 Ben Shelton in the second round. Shelton reached his first major final at the US Open last month, but Altmaier leads their head-to-head 1-0 after beating the American on clay in Hamburg earlier this season.

For Rune, the loss extends a stop-start comeback after close to a year out of the game. Shanghai is the penultimate Masters 1000 event of the season, which leaves the Dane with few top-level tournaments remaining in 2026 to gather the match practice he needs. His Davis Cup wins showed he can still beat high-quality opponents, but turning strong opening sets into victories on the main tour remains the next step.
