Mathias Gidsel Matches Champions League Scoring Record With 17 Goals Against Porto

Denmark’s Mathias Gidsel scored 17 goals from 19 attempts as Füchse Berlin beat FC Porto 40:32 in round three of the EHF Champions League. The tally equalled the competition’s single-match record held by Jesús “Chuchi” Martínez de la Cal, a mark that had stood for 17 years.

The right back went past his own personal best along the way. When he reached 14 goals he moved beyond the 13 he had scored twice during the 2025/26 season, and he kept going until he drew level with the record. His haul took him to 36 goals for the campaign, extending his lead at the top of the scoring chart. Berlin, who led 20:17 at half-time, climbed to second in Group A with the win. Porto goalkeeper Diogo Rema Marques said Berlin played at a very fast pace, which made life difficult for his side. Gidsel handed the credit to the crowd. “The fans were the players of the game today,” he said.

There was also a landmark result for SAH Aarhus, who beat two-time champions Montpellier Handball 36:32 for their first ever win in the Champions League. Aarhus led 15:13 at the break in the first meeting between the clubs. Head coach Nick Rasmussen pointed to the backing of the home supporters, saying “a strong home advantage can make all the difference.” Montpellier coach Erick Mathé said his side made too many mistakes and that Aarhus punished them, particularly on fast breaks.

Aalborg Håndbold kept up their strong start with a 33:23 win away at HC Zagreb, having already built a 17:12 lead by half-time. They now sit top of Group C on five points, three clear of Zagreb, and look well placed in the race for the main round.

Elsewhere in round three, Barça beat Dinamo Bucuresti 34:27 to become the third side with a maximum six points, joining Veszprém and Magdeburg. OTP Bank-Pick Szeged fought back to snatch a 35:35 draw with Sporting CP, and in Group B MT Melsungen beat HBC Nantes 28:23 while Orlen Wisla Plock won 32:26 at HC Vardar. That left Melsungen, Nantes and Plock level on four points at the halfway stage of the group, with Vardar still without a point. The competition moves on to round four, where the fight for main round places continues.
