MoroMaa secures early backing to bring Moroccan beauty rituals to India

MoroMaa, a beauty and personal care brand built around Moroccan ingredients, has raised 1.5 crore rupees in early-stage funding from AJ VC, the firm run by investor Aviral Bhatnagar. The deal gives the fund a stake of about 9 percent. It is a modest sum next to larger consumer rounds, but it arrives as an early vote of confidence in a label that only began selling in the middle of the year.

The brand is led by Soundous Moufakir, who runs it as sole founder and chief executive. She came to cosmetics from finance and entertainment rather than the beauty trade, holding an MBA in finance alongside a career in acting. Moufakir has said she wants to introduce Indian shoppers to what she calls M Beauty, a category she frames around Moroccan rituals and ingredients brought in directly from Morocco.

MoroMaa launched at the end of June, and Moufakir has said two of its products sold out within the first couple of months on sale. Those early results, small in scale, helped make the case to investors that the brand could find a steady audience. The company sells directly to consumers and has leaned on its Moroccan sourcing to stand out rather than competing on price in a crowded category.

Bhatnagar said the decision to back the company rested largely on the founder, pointing to her mix of product knowledge, distribution experience and firsthand understanding of Moroccan beauty. The fresh capital is earmarked for widening the product range, strengthening how MoroMaa reaches customers and spending more to make its Moroccan positioning known, keeping the outlay close to product and distribution.

India’s beauty market has drawn a wave of founder-led, direct-to-consumer labels in recent years, many betting on a single ingredient or heritage story to set them apart. MoroMaa is trying to carve out its own space with a Moroccan identity and a founder willing to front the brand in public. Whether the category she describes takes hold will depend on repeat buyers, and the funding gives the company room to find out. For now the raise is small, but it hands a first-time founder the runway to test whether a heritage-led pitch can hold attention past the launch.
