Danish Attractions Line Up Halloween Programmes Across the Country for Autumn Break

Attractions across Denmark are running Halloween programmes through October, many of them timed to match the autumn school holiday. Halloween itself falls on a Saturday this year, and events stretch from Copenhagen to northern Jutland and Funen. The Local Denmark has gathered the main options, ranging from haunted houses and ghost walks to concerts and workshops for younger children.

The occasion is still smaller in Denmark than in many other countries, because Danish children traditionally dress up for Fastelavn, the carnival held in February or early March. Trick-or-treating is known locally as slik eller ballade, and The Local Denmark advises families to knock only on doors with some Halloween decoration and to respect homes that opt out. Efterårsferie, the autumn break, falls in the third week of October in much of the country.

In the capital, Tivoli’s Halloween season runs from 2 October to 1 November with decorations, giant pumpkins and haunted houses, plus a giant pumpkin carving from 22 to 25 October and a Monster’s Night Out costume parade at 6pm on 24 October. Frilandsmuseet in Kongens Lyngby has workshops, theatre and magic shows from 10 to 18 October. The Reffen street food market runs activities from 19 October to 1 November, including a children’s party on 24 October and a Haunted Warehouse party for over-21s on 31 October, while Blågårdsgade in Nørrebro marks the day on Friday 30 October. In North Zealand, Hillerød holds a Horror Walk for ages 12 and up on 16 October.

Around Aarhus, Djurs Sommerland has witches, more than 40,000 pumpkins and two haunted houses from 10 to 18 October, with After Dark light shows from 6pm between 10 and 17 October. Tivoli Friheden runs spooky activities from 10 to 18 October and on 24 and 25 October, and Den Gamle By tells ghost stories from Danish history on the same dates, aimed at visitors aged 10 and over. Gammel Estrup manor, north of Aarhus, holds an Allehelgen event on 31 October.

Further north, Aalborg Zoo has Halloween events from 3 to 31 October and stays open until 7pm on 17, 18 and 31 October, while the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra plays child-friendly concerts at Musikkens Hus at 11am and 1pm on 31 October. Sæby offers guided ghost walks at 7pm on 14 and 16 October for ages 10 and up, and the Jensen Jordbær strawberry farm nearby has Halloween activities from 12 to 18 October. On Funen, Fyns Sommerland stages The Abandoned Amusement Park for ages 13 and up from 2 to 31 October, and Egeskov offers a gentler programme of riddles and a treasure hunt from 19 to 25 October.
